On April 14, 2018, history was made in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, with the chartering of the Alpha Alpha Alpha Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. This milestone marked the establishment of the first four-letter chapter in the Sorority’s illustrious history and became the 1017th chapter internationally and the 49th in the Mid-Western Region.
Before becoming a chapter, members operated as the Pearls of Legacy Interest Group (POLIG), officially approved by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Board of Directors on April 19, 2017. Under the leadership of Katherine Bracy, who would later serve as the Chapter’s Founding Basileus, POLIG made immediate impact through community engagement in the areas of:
-
Educational Enrichment: Donated backpacks, books, and supported the Second Chance Program.
-
Health Promotion: Participated in the Susan G. Komen Walk, adopted Alzheimer’s residents at Brookdale Cedar Ridge, and shared health tips focused on African American women.
-
Family Strengthening: Supported local food pantries and schools during Childhood Hunger Awareness Day.
-
Environmental Ownership: Planted and maintained vegetable gardens through the “Come Grow with Us” initiative.
The chapter was chartered in a ceremony led by then Mid-Western Regional Director, Jan M. Carpenter Baker, at the Stoney Creek Hotel and Conference Center in Broken Arrow. Over 100 Sorors from across the country joined in the celebration, alongside community leaders including Mayor Craig Thurmond, State Representative Regina Goodwin, and Broken Arrow Neighbors Executive Director Kim Goddard.
